Pardon Me - (DEAR) Event
Monday, Sep. 24, 2018 (1:00 pm - 3:00 pm)
Penfield Recreation's DEAR program will present Pardon Me - The Life of Henry Flipper: Readers Theater Tea written by Rand Darrow on Monday, September 24 at 1:00 PM. The play tells the life of Henry Flipper, the first black graduate of West Point in 1877. He became a second lieutenant with the Buffalo Soldiers in Texas. Court martialed in 1882 with racial overtones, he endured this challenge, and for the rest of his life, contested the charges and fought to regain his commission. He would go on to lead an extraordinary life, regardless of the unjust treatment from the military, writing and serving our country in a variety of government related campaigns and eventually documenting his incredible story along the way. On October 21, 1997, a private law firm, Arnold & Porter, filed an application of pardon with the Secretary of the Army on Flipper's behalf. Seven months later the application was forwarded by the Acting Assistant Secretary of the Army to the Office of the Pardon Attorney at the Department of Justice with a recommendation that the pardon be approved. Many pardon applications had been rejected in the past--as a matter of policy--because the intended recipients were deceased. However, President Bill Clinton pardoned Flipper on February 19, 1999. This amazing story will be told in this one-man play reading by Robert Djed Snead, a Rochester-based storyteller, actor, author and poet.
Tea and cookies will be served. The presentation in free, but registration is required. Please call 340-8655 for more information.
