Penfield’s 42nd Jazz Fund Raiser Concert
Saturday, Feb. 4, 2012 (7:30 pm - 9:30 pm)
For saxophonist/flutist Tia Fuller, the Rochester International Jazz Festival may have been just one stop on a busy summer tour schedule with her quartet last year. However, she will return for an extended visit in February to perform at the 42nd Annual Penfield Jazz Fund Raiser Concerts on February 3rd and 4th, 2012, 7:30 PM at the Penfield High School Auditorium. Tickets are $10 for adults and $6 for students, and will be available at Music and Arts in Pittsford Plaza, Penfield High School, and the Penfield branch of Canandaigua National Bank.
Penfield’s jazz program is noted for its high quality, interesting programming and world-class artists, and this year’s artist brings an added element. “We have wonderful artists each year”, comments Jim Doser, Music Department Chair for the Penfield Central School District, “but this year’s artist – Tia Fuller brings the added element of being not only an exceptional performer, but an exceptional teacher as well.” From Denver, Colorado, Fuller spends a significant amount of time delivering master classes and working with students of all ages. Her parents – both jazz musicians and public school educators in Denver – instilled a strong sense of the importance of education in the lives of children. She will work and perform with all of the jazz students in Penfield, from the 6th Grade Jazz Ensemble to the 120-member Penfield High School Studio Orchestra. Several new arrangements commissioned by the Penfield Music commission Project will be premiered on the two evening concerts. Fuller has released three CD recordings as leader of her own quartet, and has performed with many of the world’s leading jazz artists, including Danilo Perez, Gerald Wilson, Jimmy Heath, Jon Faddis, Nancy Wilson and T.S. Monk. Additionally, she has toured the world as a member of R&B star Beyonce’s all female band.

MISSING MANSIONS: EAST AVENUE BACK THEN
Sunday, Feb. 5, 2012 (2:30 pm - 4:00 pm)
Presentation at the Library. Donald S. Hall, former director of the Strasenburgh Planetarium in Rochester, worked for 26 years in what is now the East Avenue Preservation District. East Avenue used to have twice as many mansions lining it as it does now, but it still remains one of the best preserved of America’s “gateway” streets. Through extensive research Hall has been able to find old photographs of nearly all the missing mansions, as well as details about who designed them, who lived there and where the money came from to build these elaborate homes. Sponsored by the Friends of Penfield Public Library. Registration begins on Friday, January 20.

Bring your Valentine to an evening of wonderful, popular overtures performed by the Penfield Symphony Orchestra (PSO). Beethoven’s exhilarating Egmont Overture opens the concert, a piece which concludes in a jubilant, mighty fanfare. Mendelssohn’s “Hebrides Overture” captures the swell of the mighty ocean around Fingal’s Cave off the coast of Scotland and reflects the unpredictable character of the sea. Two local winners of PSO’s Jo Amish Young Artist Competition will perform concerto movements with the orchestra: cellist Rachel Mills (Kabalevsky Cello Concerto No. 1), and Dylan Kennedy (Mendelssohn Violin Concerto). The concert will conclude with the orchestral spectaculars Glinka’s “Overture to Russlan and Ludmilla” and Tchaikovsky’s wonderfully romantic “Romeo and Juliet Overture”. Join the PSO for an evening of wonderful musical enjoyment at Penfield High School’s beautiful new Auditorium.
Tickets are $14 for adults and $12 for seniors. Students may attend the concert free, so this is an ideal opportunity to bring the family along for an evening of classical entertainment.
